Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy was discovered in 1796, by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, and is based on the principle of "like cures like;" i.e. a substance which causes a certain set of symptoms in in a healthy person may be used to cure those same symptoms in a sick person, when given in the form of a homeopathic remedy. For example, when you cut an onion it causes your eyes to water; homoeopathic red onion is given for symptoms of streaming eyes, as in hay fever. As another example, too much coffee will keep you awake; consequently, coffee in homeopathic form, is given to cure insomnia.

Homeopathic remedies are made from natural substances, usually plants or minerals, and are prepared by dilution many times so that none of the material substance of the remedy is in the dilution. This has led to speculation that that the remedy is a placebo, but, interestingly enough, the remedy will work well on small children and animals that don't know why they have taken it, and certainly have no idea of what to expect from it. Also, the more you dilute the remedy, the stronger the action is, which doesn't make any sense at all in the scientific world! However, research into quantum physics may well give us some answers.

The remedy acts as a trigger, or catalyst, for you to make yourself better; your body does all the work with its own inherent healing power once the remedy has "pointed it in the right direction." The treatment will raise your level of health so that you are less susceptible to disease.

The aim is to restore the patient to health, mentally, emotionally, and physically in a gentle, natural way, without causing any harm.

The physician's highest and only mission is to restore the sick to health...
(Samuel Hahnemann, founder of homoeopathy)

Homoeopathy is safe, gentle, and effective, and has no side effects. It can be used alongside conventional medicine, and it does not interfere with any medicines prescribed by your GP or hospital consultant.

The remedies should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from strong odours such as camphor and eucalyptus, and away from mobile phones, as these may antidote them. They should be taken in a clean mouth, with no food/drink/toothpaste/tobacco for at least 15 minutes before or after the remedy in order to get the maximum effect, and they should be sucked so they dissolve in the mouth and become absorbed by the tiny blood vessels under the tongue.

Homoeopathy is a complete system of medicine, so, in theory, it can be used to treat all kinds of illnesses. However, no system of medicine is a panacea for all ailments; if there was, we would all be using it!

However, it has been seen to be effective in a wide range of treatments for people of all ages, as illustrated below:

  • In pregnancy, it can be used to support the well-being of both mother and foetus, and also for problems which may arise such as morning sickness, heartburn, constipation, haemorrhoids etc.
  • It is very useful during labour and childbirth, where a comprehensive homeopathic childbirth kit may be used.
  • Postnatally, it may be used for healing after an episiotomy or Caesarian section; for the exhausted new mother, or for post-natal depression.

In the new-born, it may be useful in sticky eyes, cradle cap, nappy rash, colic, constipation, and feeding problems. Later on, it is useful in teething, glue ear, childhood infections, ADHD etc., behavioural problems, asthma, eczema, chest infections, tonsillitis etc. It is useful in puberty e.g. acne, menstrual problems, emotional upsets, anxiety, exam nerves, and so on.

In adulthood, homoeopathy is useful in stress, lack of confidence, panic attacks. In the female, it is useful in gynaecological problems such as PMT, fibroids, endometriosis, thrush, infertility, and later on, for prolapse, menopausal flushes, and all the problems that go with them.

Other examples of when homoeopathy has been seen to be beneficial is in depression, grief, allergies, hay fever, skin disorders. Also in arthritis, rheumatism, joint pain, sprains, strains, RSI, asthma, coughs, cols, sore throats, sinusitis, bronchitis. Other complaints include IBS, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease , headaches, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, M.E; glandular fever, insomnia, cystitis... and the list goes on.

I enjoy treating people of all ages and all types of problems, especially in those with stress, anxiety, IBS etc., and also women of all ages with hormonal imbalance issues.

I have been in private practice since 1991, and I have also taught basic first aid to the general public. In addition to this, I have been a tutor, lecturer and supervisor at the South Downs School of Homoeopathy from the day it first opened in September 1997 until 2016.

If you have any questions you would like to ask, I would be happy to speak to you.
